Avenues to Independence

Chicago Partnership Board

 Spotlight on Wine

Wednesday, September 15, 2010  at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, 1338 W. Lake Street; Chicago

“A lifelong commitment to the people we serve.”

Spotlight on Wine Sponsorship Opportunities

At Avenues to Independence we promise people with developmental disabilities opportunities to live and work with independence and dignity right here in the community.  It’s a promise we have kept for more than 57 years, and it’s at the core of all that we do.

Now that promise is greatly challenged.  For decades the State of Illinois has had an agreement with families that there will be state funding to support people with developmental disabilities.  In recent years, the state has not fully lived up to its promise, and the cumulative effect of these broken promises is very serious.  Today, the people Avenues serves have been put in the middle of the worst economic crisis in Illinois in 80 years, and their future is at great risk.  You should know that they have done nothing to cause this current crisis, but clearly our State will not meet its responsibilities to them.

This year 24 long-time Avenues’ residents living in Avenues’ supported homes will lose their funding entirely.  This is both alarming and heartbreaking, especially in light of the fact that some of our residents have lived at Avenues for more than 30 years.

The Avenues residents in jeopardy are some of our most independent, yet they still require our support with employment, daily living tasks, medical supervision and community integration.  Despite the fact that their funding will disappear, all of these residents will continue to need support, and as they grow older, it is very likely they will need increasing levels of support.

The Chicago Partnership Board of Avenues to Independence has a deep commitment to these individuals, and works tirelessly year-round to enhance and enrich the lives of the people that Avenues serves.

In response to this funding challenge, the Chicago Partnership Board will present its sixth Spotlight on Wine event.  The Board is committed to helping our residents remain in their Avenues’ homes, and our residents intend to do what they can to work and contribute to their household budgets.  But all of this support comes with a hefty price tag, and frankly, they can use some help.

Your sponsorship is not just about paying the rent.  It also means giving the people of Avenues the chance to lead lives with independence and dignity.  It’s a wonderful gift, and by participating in the Spotlight on Wine you will help Avenues’ residents continue to live and thrive in their homes for many years to come.
