It is with mixed emotions that we share the news that our dear friend and colleague, Vice President of Programs Cathy Kerr, will be retiring in September after nearly 42 years of incomparable leadership, care and concern for the people of Avenues. Though we are sad, we want to celebrate her many years of passion, dedication and service and wish her much health and happiness as she pursues the next chapter of her life.

Thanks to everyone who has expressed concerns for the folks of Avenues during the current COVID-19 outbreak. Through the work of our direct care and other staff, Avenues has weathered the first wave of this pandemic. The residents and staff who had tested positive three weeks ago have completed their quarantine periods; no additional symptoms have arisen and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the worse is over.

On July 22 Avenues held the Annual Avenues/ Gorman Golf, Tennis and Paddle Classic. This is the 31st Classic held at the Park Ridge Country Club. It was a successful event raising nearly $215,000 to help support improvements to the health and fitness programs at the Center for Independence. Avenues Board President Jerry Feldman introduced Jenny and Stephanie, two Avenues program participants, who shared their excitement for the improvements with guests.

Avenues program participants celebrated the holidays at the Center for Independence in Wheeling on December 13. The annual event is sponsored by the Suburban Partnership Board and featured games, carolers, lunch and dancing. Thank you to Dale Kendrick and Barnaby’s Pizza in Des Plaines for their donation of more than 60 pizzas for lunch. After lunch Santa made a grand entrance and handed out gifts to all the program participants.
